Parents,
After carefully evaluating updated guidance, various instructional options and information from state agencies, the Norman Board of Education has voted to phase students back into full-time, traditional learning. All three learning options — traditional, blended and virtual — will continue to be offered. However, students who are enrolled in the traditional learning option will be phased back into school buildings over the next three weeks, as outlined below.
Sept. 28 - Oct. 2
Elementary students will return to full-time, traditional instruction.
Middle school students will return to school on an alternate schedule.
High school students will continue following the remote learning schedule.
Oct. 5 - Oct. 7
*There is no school Oct. 8-9 due to fall break.
Elementary students continue full-time, traditional instruction.
Middle school students will return to full-time, traditional instruction.
High school students will return to school on an alternate schedule.
Oct. 12 - Oct. 16
All students will report to school for full-time, traditional instruction.
After the phase-in process is complete, students will continue following a full-time schedule unless the Oklahoma COVID-19 Alert System reports Cleveland County in the red level.
It has always been our intention to provide a safe pathway for in-person instruction, as we know the vast majority of our students learn best in our classrooms. We also know that for some students, our schools offer safety, protection and resources that might not otherwise exist in their lives. Additionally, parents, teachers and students have shared with us their desire for consistency to ensure reliable routines for students and families and adequate time for teachers to plan delivery models for their instruction. By offering full-time, traditional learning, we can provide as much consistency as possible while still providing educational choices for families who prefer our blended or virtual learning options.
In addition to following CDC guidelines with regard to safeguards in schools to the extent possible, we will continue to work closely with the Oklahoma State Department of Health to mitigate transmission of COVID-19. We are also prepared to transition to remote learning on a school-by-school basis if advised to do so by health department officials.
It is important to recognize that many teachers have legitimate health concerns about providing in-person instruction during these challenging times. We absolutely understand these valid concerns and respect our teachers in their desire for a safe workplace. These are our colleagues, our friends and the people who are responsible for directly preparing and inspiring all students to achieve their full potential. We are always committed to providing learning environments that are as safe as possible for our students, teachers and staff, which is why we will continue to work diligently to provide as many accommodations and options as we possibly can for our educators.
Providing in-person instruction amid a pandemic is certainly an issue that schools are struggling with across the state, nation and beyond. Opening schools has become a polarizing issue, however, the one thing we can all agree on is that we all want what is best for students and teachers alike. If we work together, show grace for one another and focus on our shared goals, I am confident we will get through this.
